The immediate past deputy governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Mukhtar Shagari, has formally declared his intention to contest for the governorship seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Shagari, who is a former Minister of Water Resources under the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, also contested for the same post on the PDP platform in the 2015 general elections but lost out to Ambassador Abdallah Wali, who emerged as the PDP candidate.
He declared his intention at the state PDP Secretariat, where he met with the leaders of the party.
Speaking with News men after making his intention known to the party leaders, he promised to make education, health care delivery, agriculture and infrastructure as his priority if elected.
He said, “Education will be a very important sector which I will pay attention to; if you are not educated, people will be pushing you here and there.”
“I will also ensure that infrastructure development is given a lift in Sokoto State, I will also ensure that healthcare delivery is giving priority too.
“I cannot see the reason why we cannot provide enough drugs for our people in the state, there are people in the remote areas who cannot afford to take their children to the hospital.”
Shagari also affirmed that no candidate could come out in the state and boast of having more experience in politics, governance, administration and others more than he possessed
He, however, disclosed that he was willing to abide by the decision of the leaders of the party on the mode of the primary to be adopted in choosing the party’s candidate.
